To introduce the new unit, students worked in groups to look at statistics, artistic writing, and informational writing pertaining to the 4 possible topics they could choose to research. At the end of the class, they selected their first and second choices for topics. *Note: This lesson was done in 3 out of 4 classes with a substitute, so the agenda has fewer parts than it might normally. Also, there is no accompanying PowerPoint. I made a poster with the agenda and an example of how to fill out the worksheet. Agenda

This class brought up the topics of street harassment and victim-blaming (without naming it as such). Many students (males and females) said women were responsible for men staring at them if they wore revealing clothing. Below are some resources that serve as a response to these comments. Here's the video that's been in social media lately, showing clips from 10 hours of a woman walking in NYC. This is a feminist response to a middle school's ban on girls wearing tight pants because it "distracts the boys." This is a critical response to the above video, created by women of color, addressing the lack of white men in the video footage. This chart helps us remember when a woman is to blame for something that is done to her.
Today in seminar, we touched upon the idea of women who are in abusive relationships. Some people said women are stupid to stay in these relationships and should stand up for themselves. Others said it's hard to leave those relationships for different reasons. Below are some resources that address this topic, including current events and feminist responses. Here's a timeline of the events that followed Ray Rice, a professional football player, hitting his wife. This is a video by feminist Laci Green, discussing the difficulties of women leaving abusive relationships. Here are several tweets from women who are survivors of domestic violence, using the hashtag: #WhyIStayed. I wasn't in school today, but my students analyzed an article about the #NotAllMen backlash to the feminist #YesAllWomen posts on Twitter, which followed the misogynistic Isla Vista shootings. The agenda for the lesson is included as the 4th page of the attached document.
Students, choose 3 of the texts below and summarize them in your yellow organizer. This is due Wednesday, December 10th.

Next year, I really want to use the video, "Pretty Hurts" by Beyonce. It connects so many of the ideas we have discussed so far in this unit about women and the media. I would love to analyze the lyrics. It is a great text for making connections. Perhaps I will use this as a model for the final project of the unit in which students will be analyzing a piece of media of their choosing. (I will first model the process, and this might be a great piece of media to use!) Choose FOUR assignments from the options below. Then, fill in all the columns on your organizer. This is due on November 20th (MED-10).
This week, my students are finishing up projects, which I hope to post this week as they are turned in and presented to the class. In the meantime, I've been further developing ideas for the next unit, which will start in November! One extremely timely resource, given the Gamer Gate backlash, is this amazing series of videos by Anita Sarkeesian. As a gamer herself, she provides an important feminist analysis of the video gaming industry. Unfortunately, as a result, she has had to cancel public speaking engagements as a result of serious death threats. I'm going to include excerpts of this series in the upcoming unit, specifically the first few minutes of the first video on women as background decoration. In it, she introduces and applies Martha Nussbaum's theory of objectivity, which I plan to teach my students, perhaps using more understandable language.
Due to room changes today and the resulting time crunch, the homework was not introduced properly. So, tonight's homework assignment is to watch the short film: Love is All You Need? (You can click on the picture on the left to get to the YouTube link for this video. After you watch it, please fill out the 2 boxes on the worksheet (main idea and thoughts/connections). Here are all the other videos I spoke about today, but we were not able to watch:
