Our class does not meet this week, as it is Regents week. However, I wanted to share some student papers from our last unit on gender in the media. Below are some examples. Enjoy!

One Billion Rising is an awesome campaign that started a couple of years ago to raise awareness of gendered violence. I would love to do something in our school to support this initiative. Another school in our network is doing a flashmob. (Here's the dance.) Since my students will have just taught the lessons they created around gendered issues, I thought it might be cool to invite the rest of the school's students to choose a topic and attend a student-taught lesson on their topic of choice. I would love to hear more ideas for how to participate in One Billion Rising! Today, students learn how to create a lesson. Students will begin to outline their lesson, determining the content to teach, how to teach it, and assigning responsibilities to each group member.
Agenda
Reflections
Today will be the last day students will dedicate to researching information. In order to begin planning the lesson tomorrow (and to determine what else groups need to research), they will organize their information at the start of the class to determine the information they want to teach. Agenda
Reflections
On Day 4 of the unit, I introduced how to cite internet articles. We also briefly discussed plagiarism and its consequences. The first source students had to use was from the list I provided (see "Research Resources" tab at the top of this page.) Day 5 & 6 were independent research days with computers. (Students find their own sources after the first one from my site.) Do Now for Day 4: 5 mins
Discuss: 5 mins
Introduce Task: 5 mins
*Students received pages 4-12 from the file below. Page 4 was a one page handout and pages 5-12 were double-sided (source info on one side, information from the source on the other).
The following resources complete the list of topics my students have chosen for their research projects. |

This lesson served to activate prior knowledge about student research topics and generate research questions. Additionally, I used this lesson as an opportunity to try out some group share routines I learned at Rhonda Bondie's PD last week.
- Aim: What will we be doing for the next month?
- Do Now: (ON YOUR OWN):
- Find your group's table (see the chart on the board) 10 mins
- Fill out the “Know” and “Want to know” columns of your K-W-L chart 7 mins
- Domino Share answers in group (see my previous post about Rhonda Bondie's PD for more details about these routines) 8 mins
- Introduce Project
- Research your topic, plan a 1-hour lesson, teach the lesson to the class 5 mins
- Concerns - write your #1 fear/worry/possible struggle on a post-it note 3 mins
- Rumors (see patterns, use patterns to group heterogeneously for next activity) 10 mins
- Think-Talk-Open Exchange (each partner shares concern, during open exchange - students offer advice and soothe concerns) 15 mins
- Closing 7 mins
- Domino Share: favorite group share routine
- Introduce plan for the week (note-taking strategy, citing sources, online research)
Reflections
- Getting students into groups took much longer than I thought it would. Despite "No complaining" being my #1 rule, many students were unhappy receiving their 2nd choice topic. I'm not sure how to prevent this in the future, as everyone who submitted their choices received their #1 or #2 choice. Perhaps I will highlight the importance of both choices and consistently repeat if students are absent without a note, they forfeit any opportunity to complain.
- The group share routines were shaky at first, but the students really liked them. Most of the students noted the "Think-Talk-Open Exchange" was their favorite because it allowed students to help each other problem solve. I think I will continue to use this routine in this way.
- During Rumors, the largest concern for all classes was teaching their classmates for an hour. Many thought this was too long; others were nervous to stand in front of the class. Some students said they were nervous about finding enough information. A couple students in each class said they were not nervous about anything. Due to the unevenness of responses, groups were larger than I wanted. (I think this works best with triads, but in trying to get one of each concern in each group, they ended up being as big as 6 people.
- Students had many questions about the project, but I think they would have had as many if I gave them a detailed description. There seemed to be less stress with a simpler, bulleted list of pieces of the project.

*Note: This lesson was done in 3 out of 4 classes with a substitute, so the agenda has fewer parts than it might normally. Also, there is no accompanying PowerPoint. I made a poster with the agenda and an example of how to fill out the worksheet.
- Aim: Which topic would I like to research?
- Do Now: Put your name on the worksheet being handed out. Make sure there are only 4 groups for today.
- Activity: As a group, chose 1 text to read together. (Choices are: artistic texts, infographic, or - in some cases - informational text). After reading, fill in the row of your worksheet. (If you have folder, "Gendered Violence", fill in that row.) *After 10-12 minutes, move to a new table and read a new text from that folder.
- TEXTS IN EACH FOLDER
- Gendered Violence - "41 Bullets Off Broadway," (poem by Willie Perdomo) "Dear Rihanna," "My Short Skirt," (artistic pieces from I Am an Emotional Creature) "Purely Rape: The Myth of Sexual Purity and How It Reinforces Rape Culture," (op-ed style chapter of Yes Means Yes), "Sexual Assault Today" (infographic)
- Reproductive Health - "Things I Heard About Sex," (artistic piece from I Am an Emotional Creature), "Real Sex Education," (op-ed style chapter of Yes Means Yes), pgs. 43-46 of The Girls Who Went Away (informational text), "US Women Who Have Abortions" (infographic)
- Global Issues - pgs. 145-147 of Full Frontal Feminism (op-ed style text with facts), "Celia" (artistic piece from A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and a Prayer), "Five Cows and a Calf" (artistic piece from I Am an Emotional Creature), "Child Sex Tourism" (infographic)
- Job Equity - pgs. 76-78 & 161 from The Guys' Guide to Feminism (informational text), "The Making (Migrant Song)" (poem from Migritude), "The Leadership Gap" (infographic)
- Closing: During the last 5-10 minutes of class, students will fill out choices 1 & 2 on the back of the worksheet and turn it in.
Reflections
- The students mostly chose the infographics, but some groups challenged themselves to read text. Some groups also finished the infographics early, and then read a short poem in the extra time available.
- I like giving the students choices. However, it does make the next few lessons difficult to plan for, as some groups read texts I wanted to use in the next few days as part of a different lesson. Now, I will have to find other texts that those topics for students to use later on.
- Some students did not write any choices on the back of their worksheet, which made assigning groups extremely difficult. I want to save enough time at the end of class to emphasize how important writing the 2 choices and handing in the paper is...it determines students' class satisfaction for the next month!
