To introduce the new unit, students worked in groups to look at statistics, artistic writing, and informational writing pertaining to the 4 possible topics they could choose to research. At the end of the class, they selected their first and second choices for topics. *Note: This lesson was done in 3 out of 4 classes with a substitute, so the agenda has fewer parts than it might normally. Also, there is no accompanying PowerPoint. I made a poster with the agenda and an example of how to fill out the worksheet. Agenda

Today, I attended a PD that addressed bridging the gap between various types of diversity in the classroom using group routines. Rhonda Bondie's ideas are research-based and many teachers have found success using her teaching strategies. Below, I've outlined my takeaways & some ideas for how I plan to apply them in my class. Her website is here if you want to check out her stuff! Grouping Philosophy

What is Rigor? (Rhonda Bondie's definition)
In the last lesson of the media unit, I asked students for feedback on the final project and the unit as a whole. Below are their comments. What I liked
What I would change
My biggest take-away
Today's lesson served as a "publishing" opportunity for students to share their media critiques. As this was a media unit, students transformed their papers into a 120-character tweet (followed by the 20-character #genderstudiesforall). Agenda

Whenever we're working on a project, there's always some students who finish early, some who finish right on time, and some who don't turn anything in when the due date finally arrives. I have not yet found a perfect solution to accommodate these multiple timelines, but I have found the last couple of days to be productive for nearly all (if not all) students. The Process
After reading students' papers, there were a few things with which most students struggled. Below are a few resources I will direct students to use as they revise & edit their papers for the next 2 days in class. If anyone has suggestions of resources to use to explain these areas of struggle, feel free to share! Grammar struggles
Organizational Struggles
Today we worked on the opposing claim paragraph of our media critique essays. Agenda:

Today we talk about what serves as quality analysis to stress how important this is to the argument. I tried to get them excited about this by reminding them it's an argument - they love to do this! Agenda

Today's lesson asked students to organize their supporting arguments and gather supporting evidence (from the piece of media chosen) and from class texts.) Agenda:
