Many of my students had not heard of what was happening in Ferguson, MO. This lesson served to inform them of the shooting itself and the events since August. As we are in a media unit, we looked specifically at the media's portrayal of Michael Brown and the case in general. Agenda:

Overall, students did quite well for their first seminar in the class. Below, I'll list some of the insightful comments that were raised. I'm also listing some of the suggested rules media should follow. The Aim question was: What rules should the media follow? Insightful Comments/Connections/Questions
Suggested Rules
Next year, I really want to use the video, "Pretty Hurts" by Beyonce. It connects so many of the ideas we have discussed so far in this unit about women and the media. I would love to analyze the lyrics. It is a great text for making connections. Perhaps I will use this as a model for the final project of the unit in which students will be analyzing a piece of media of their choosing. (I will first model the process, and this might be a great piece of media to use!) This lesson sets students up for the seminar. It encourages them to brainstorm what rules they think exist to limit what the media can show. It also introduces the lack of real limitations on media in the United States. Agenda

This lesson focuses on the messages we receive about gender while growing up. First, we look at Disney's gendered messages, and then we read an article about calling girls "pretty." Agenda

This lesson looks at another "text," America the Beautiful. It also provides time to practice using the organizer I'm asking students to fill out to summarize in-class and homework "texts" they can use in their seminar and final project. Agenda:

Choose FOUR assignments from the options below. Then, fill in all the columns on your organizer. This is due on November 20th (MED-10).
Today was day 2 of the documentary, Miss Representation. Students continued to fill in their worksheets. Agenda:
